Savenelli Pipes

The Savinelli story started in 1876 when Achille Savinelli Sr. opened in downtown Milan, one of the first stores in the world exclusively selling smoking articles, in Via Orefici paragraph 2 corner of Piazza Duomo, the heart of Milan. The small shop, which still exists today, quickly became a meeting place where passionate smokers could exchange ideas and experiences. It was there that Savinelli Sr. began designing pipes that were then made to produce craftsmen Varese. At that time in the world of pipes was a radical change: they began to assert the briar pipes, an improvement compared to traditional foam and clay pipes. At the same time opening the shop in Milan, his brother Achilles moved to Genoa to open them even a hardware shop in Galleria Mazzini. In 1881 Achille Savinelli Sr. exhibited their wares Italian Industrial Exposition, the forerunner of the Fiera di Milano, initiative demonstrated an entrepreneurial instinct that has been passed down to subsequent generations.

In January 1890 the son of Achilles, Charles Savinelli, took over and ran the store for more than 50 years. Develop very good relationships with customers, thanks to his innate gifts as a psychologist, and knew how to recommend the right product, suited to the needs of each smoker.

Achilles Junior was born in 1918. The young Achilles he specialized in small workshop in the back of the store: while her parents looked after the customers, Achille Jr. preferred to stay and work in the back, inventing and designing. Unfortunately, the outbreak of World War II had to interrupt his apprenticeship with pipes to carry five years of military service.

Returning from the war, the Achilles found not only marketing quite satisfactory, and decided to leave the shop of his father to produce his own pipe. It was an important decision for the young Achilles, that he wanted to continue and improve the family tradition.His worry was this: why the best-selling pipe in Italy were made abroad while the best was rooted in our territory? This consideration led him to start his own production with a quality hitherto unthinkable for an Italian product.
And his self-confidence combined with a bit of national pride, proved successful. He immersed himself in the development of the company, and with the help of his friends, and Mario Vettoruzzo Pomè Hamlet, embarked on the new company in the area of Varese, Molina di Barasso.

In 1948 he opened the factory, and Savinelli pipes began gaining prestige in all markets.

Prior to the opening of the factory, millions of pipes had been exported from Italy, but the quality of these pipes was very low. When Achilles Jr. began production, many people wondered how could an Italian to compete with foreign brands well known.But Achilles was able to create a luxury product that could compete with the big names and even surpass their quality, so that today Savinelli represents the highest standard of quality of the pipe in the world. His imagination and refinement were undoubtedly passed down to today’s Savinelli, Giancarlo, who picked up where he left Achilles.Giancarlo is now at the helm of the company, and has brought new energy and ideas to Savinelli.
